  10.  Are the allied forces busy bombing dummy tanks and
  11. planes? The Italian firm that could probably help answer
  12. this nagging question is called M.V.M. and is based in
  13. Turin. The company makes decoy planes and tanks and has
  14. aggressively marketed them in the Middle East and
  15. elsewhere.

  17.  Over the past eight years M.V.M. has legally sold
  18. thousands of tanks, planes and missile launchers to
  19. countries at war. It's perfectly legal since M.V.M
  20. products are made of a "specially patented fiberglass."
  21. The tanks and planes do have a metal core - "a
  22. lead-bearing metallic structure" says the catalogue- to
  23. escape detection. Points out Liugi Caligaris, a leading
  24. defense analyst and retired general, "It's not against
  25. Italian law since they aren't weapons they're toys."

  27.  Owner Mario Moselli has refused to say if he sold to
  28. Iraq specifically, or reveal his clients names. But he
  29. insists his company does not produce Scud launchers, only 
  30. launchers for Hawks. Founded in 1982, the Turin company's 
  31. arsenal includes the following tanks: U.S.- made M60s and 
  32. M107s, British Chieftans and the Soviet T55. There are
  33. also models of F15 and F16 fighters as well as Phantoms
  34. fighters in the company's catalogue.

  36.  The plastic decoys are certainly cheaper than the
  37. originals: under $30,000 for a tank and under $40,000 for 
  38. a missile launcher or fighter jet.

  40.  In response to one reporter's question about a large
  41. quantity of the ersatz equipment being in Iraqui hands,
  42. Moselli reportedly said "It's likely." He only directly
  43. admits to selling to Middle Eastern countries and members 
  44. of NATO.

  46.  Moselli was beseiged by Italian and international
  47. journalists today after reports of his enterprising
  48. company's activities were published this week. Therefore
  49. he was not available for a phone interview with TIME. But 
  50. more details should be published in tomorrows papers
  51. here. Will update from Rome as required.

  53.  Meanwhile, a few pages of the illustrated company
  54. catalogue faxed to our offices read as follows in Italian

  70. emphasized: - their use as targets for practice drills
  71. and - in tactic-strategic situations, which permit
  72. carrying-out the "plan of deception."

  77. realistic enough to be mistaken for a real one, even from 
  78. a short distance. -The boday is made up of panels, easily 
  79. replacable, as they are applied on a load bearing
  80. metallic structure. Applications: as targets for practice 
  81. drills. For carrying out the "plan of deception." 2. F 16 
  82. Tactic -fighter aircraft. USA production The model
  83. produced by our company looks real enough to be
  84. mistaken....".
